A Gorilla Named Audrey: Honoring the Legacy of Hunter Wildlife Rescue’s Founder

A Gorilla Named Audrey: Honoring the Legacy of Hunter Wildlife Rescue’s Founder

5 January 2025

The Hunter Wildlife Rescue community is mourning the loss of its beloved founder and president, Audrey Koosmen. Merriwa couple, Christine and Larry Members, were unable to attend the funeral as they were in Uganda on a Gorilla trek at the time. They wanted to pay tribute to Audrey’s life work and dedication to wildlife conservation so they decided to adopt a Gorilla through WWF in Audrey’s honour.

“As a mark of respect, we have adopted a baby Gorilla in her name,” said Christine. “She [Audrey] was a champion of wildlife. It was a privilege to know her.”

Audrey was a passionate advocate for animal welfare, dedicating countless hours to rescuing and rehabilitating injured and orphaned wildlife in the Hunter region and NSW. Her tireless efforts touched the lives of countless animals and inspired a generation of wildlife carers.

The symbolic adoption will see funds go towards WWF’s great work in developing ecotourism, monitoring populations, preserving habitat and preventing poaching of these magnificent but vulnerable animals. A beautiful and fitting tribute to the life and legacy of Audrey who was a true champion for all wildlife.
